What is CONSIDERED a Workshop?

The VBAC Workshop Committee considers "any creative activity done in a group setting for educational purposes"- a workshop. This includes, but is not limited to: group activities, lectures, panel discussions, demonstrations, field trips, tours of creative studios and facilities, seminars, critiques, retreats, and the like, to be appropriate events to be considered for facilitation and participation.

On Friday, February 23, 2018, members had the opportunity to join us for a fun and fast-paced, eye-opening, up-close two-hour presentation/demonstration! IN ADDITION to the ”Just Paint” sample bag of paints and gel mediums, attendees also received the Golden information packet, which includes the hand-painted color chart (a $15.00 retail value). Cost to attend for Art Club members was a reasonable $3.00 per ticket.

Title: Plein Air with George Van Hook
Description: We painted outdoors learning how to design, simplify and compose scenes of local Vero. All the basics of painting were explored in this process which translate beautifully into studio work post workshop.

Organized by Mary Ellen Koser and Karen Leffel-Massengill, intermediate and advanced painters had the pleasure of instruction by internationally-known George VanHook for three glorious days of intensive plein air painting in oils, Feb 25-27, 2017. Participants included; Jennifer Donolo, Laura Farrara, Dottie Ferone, Dorothy Flynn, Barbara Glover, Audrey Golden, Rebecca Gratwick, Karen Leffel-Massengill, Mimi McCabe, James Newman, Grace Savage, and Mary Skinner.

Medium: Watercolor
Title: Watercolor Magic

Description: “My goal as an instructor is to present you with as much design and color theory information as time allows and encourage you to take advantage of the inherent wet into wet qualities of watercolor. I believe in the power of planning and understanding the basics. The objective is not to change you, but to add to your core of knowledge. Then it is up to you to take this knowledge and apply it to the style and subject matter that suits you.”

This workshop was designed to inspire your creativity: by learning to “see” and experience some of the different aspects of color theory; by exploring different design concepts; by experiencing and understanding the power of planning; and by using individual critiques for all. The goal was inspire the advanced beginners and intermediates, provide a review and challenges for the advanced student.

Watercolor was the medium of choice during the “Watercolor Magic” workshop presented by nationally and regionally-known Ms. Sue Archer March 27-31, 2017. This five-day workshop included: Wendy Bird, Dru Bowerman, Becky Brown, wendy Carnell, Evelyn Cunningham, Pat Robertis, Janie Gruenke, Janet Newcombe, Deanie Skaggs, Nina Tarnuzzer.


Carol Makris

Medium: Oil in the plein air style
Title: Painting Lifelike Birds
Description: Carol Makris, originally from New Jersey, has been a full time resident of Vero Beach for the past 11 years.  She has pursued her creativity and passion for art professionally as an illustrator, graphic designer, faux finisher, muralist and most recently fine artist.  Some of her recent works are on exhibit at the Artists Guild Gallery.  Carol is a 1983 BFA graduate from Parsons School of Design and has also trained with Faux Effects International and several distinguished decorative artists in Europe.  Her recent "Birds of the Park" mural in Riverside Park has captured significant attention from the community for its amazing detail, color and design.
