Title:

Introduction to Illustration

Workshop will consist of designing and developing a solution consistent with a university-level illustration curriculum.  Focus will be on conceptualization and visualization, culminating in original art for illustration. Final critique will take place at a later date to be determined by the group.

Participants should have a good working knowledge of basic drawing, composition, and visualization skills.  Digital artists should have a command of appropriate photo-editing and/or vector-based drawing software.

Participants should be able to bring 3-5 works which demonstrate a similar style, look, or direction regardless of subject matter, size, or media. Actual work is preferred.

Artist Bio

Betsy Kurzinger is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art + Design at Eastern Kentucky University where she directed the graphic design and illustration program from 1980 until her retirement in 2007. She received her BFA (1976) and MFA (1980) from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.

Primarily working in collage, mixed media and digital imagery, she has had her work included in over 200 exhibitions locally, regionally, and nationally, including many solo shows and awards.

One of 125 selected nationally, Ms. Kurzinger is also an AP Reader for ETS/College Board, where she has the unique opportunity to score high school level artwork for college credit. This past June, this group of 125 reviewed over 65,000 +/- portfolios.

Her work is included in many public collections including Duke Hospital, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Coca-Cola Elizabethtown, KY, Olympic swimmer Greg Louganis, Museum of Modern Art-Cuenca, Ecuador, Trans Financial Bank-Bowling Green, KY, Collector Elaine Harrison and CBS Newscaster Al Smith. Her work also hangs permanently in many private collections.
